ABOUT CINCINNATI OPERA
OUR VISION
A community that is transformed and inspired by the power and beauty of opera.
Our Mission
To enrich and connect the community through diverse opera experiences.
A Century of Music, Storytelling, and Community
Welcome to Cincinnati Opera, a cherished cultural gem and the second-oldest opera company in North America. Founded in 1920, our company has built a legacy of artistic excellence and meaningful connections with audiences. Whether you’re a lifelong opera lover or discovering it for the first time, we invite you to explore the rich history and dynamic future of Cincinnati Opera.
A Legacy of Firsts and Favorites
The Zoo Years (1920–1971): It all began at the Cincinnati Zoo, where our inaugural performance took place in June 1920. For over 50 years, this unique outdoor setting served as our home, hosting unforgettable performances by legendary artists like Beverly Sills, Montserrat Caballé, and Sherrill Milnes.
A New Stage at Music Hall (1972–Present): In 1972, we moved to Cincinnati’s historic Music Hall, a venue that allowed us to expand our artistic ambitions. With innovative productions and the introduction of musical theater, we began welcoming new audiences and creating fresh experiences.
Innovation and Exploration: From the 1990s onward, we have embraced bold storytelling and new works. Highlights include the premieres of Janáček’s Jenufa and Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking under the artistic leadership of Nicholas Muni and the continued mix of beloved classics and contemporary operas championed by our current Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director, Evans Mirageas.
Connecting Through Community
We believe opera is for everyone. Our community-focused initiatives include:
Opera Fusion: New Works: In collaboration with the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, we’ve developed and workshopped numerous new operas, many of which have gone on to acclaimed world premieres.
Education programs for kids, families, and adults: From in-school programs to events at community centers, houses of worship, and public gathering spaces, we’re committed to making opera accessible and engaging for all.
Looking Forward
As we approach our 105th anniversary season, we’re energized by the possibilities ahead. From our celebrated mainstage season to our community programming and everything in between, we remain dedicated to creating extraordinary experiences that celebrate and resonate with audience members like you.
